Snow, hot chocolate, lit fireplace and warm fluffy socks..! This is how one survives the long cold nights of the Danish winter, better known as hygge (read hugga).

Hygge translates into the feeling of comfort or coziness and simply enjoying the moments that arise spontaneously when in the company of family and friends, candlelight, drinking mulled wine, gløgg, eating aebleskiver, and the warmth of a burning fire, socks and blankets.

The Christmas spirit is lived in hygge, and although it has already passed I will leave here some of the Danish traditions that I collected:

• Singing christmas songs around the pine tree (Jule song)

• På loftet sidder nissen is a very popular song for the kids and tells the story of some naughty rats that want to steal tporridge from an elf in an attic.

Calendário de Jule com 24 lembranças para as crianças abrirem todos os dias até à véspera de natal.

• There are lots of Christmas markets and the streets are completely iluminated, the decorations are not only for the tree, but for the whole house. Oranges with cloves release Christmas scents.

• Drinking gløgg, mulled wine; eating aebleskiver, pancake-type pastries dipped in strawberry or raspberries jam and powdered sugar; and playing bingo with friends and family.

Neve, chocolate quente, lareira acesa e meias quentinhas..! é assim que se sobrevive às noites longas e frias do inverno dinamarquês, mais conhecido como hygge (lê-se hugga).

Hygge traduz-se no sentimento de conforto e o desfrutar de um momento que surge espontaneamente quando se está na companhia de familiares e amigos, à luz das velas, a beber vinho quente (gløgg), a comer aebleskiver, e no calor de uma lareira acesa, meias e mantas.

A época natalícia é vivida em hygge, e embora já tenha passado vou deixar aqui algumas tradições dinamarquesas que recolhi:

• Cantar músicas de natal de mãos dadas à volta do pinheiro Jule song

• På loftet sidder nissen é uma música muito popular para os miúdos e conta a história de uns ratinhos marotos que querem roubar as pápas de um elf que está num sótão.

• Há imensos mercados de natal e as ruas ficam completamente iluminadas, as decorações não ficam só pela árvore, mas sim em toda a casa. As laranjas com cravinhos espetados dão cheirinhos de natal.

• Beber gløgg, vinho quente; comer aebleskiver, bolinhas tipo panqueca mergulhadas em doce de morango ou framboesas e açúcar em pó; e jogar bingo com os amigos e familiares.
